미국인의 파티는 호화스러운 분위기보다는 소탈(folksy)하고 평범한 분위기 속에서 진행된다. 파티에 참석하는 손님에게 주는 선물은 ‘party favor’라고 하며 초대장(invitation) 마지막에는 항상 ‘R.S.V.P.’, 즉 초대에 대한 답변을 주세요(Please reply invitation)라는 불어로 참석여부를 알려달라고 한다. 집들이는 ‘housewarming party’ 또는 ‘open house party’라고 하며, 초대받은 사람들이 각자 음식을 준비해오는 곳은 ‘potluck party’, 송별회는 ‘farewell party’ 그리고 돌잔치는 ‘baby’s first birthday party’라고 한다.



Mark: Freddy and I are hosting a party this weekend, you guys want to help?(이번 주말에 프레디와 내가 파티를 주최할거야. 너희들 도와 줄거니?)

John: Of course, I love to host parties. What kind is it, a housewarming party, farewell party, garden party, cocktail party, potluck party or a bachelor party?(물론이지, 난 파티 주최하는 걸 좋아해. 집들이, 송별회, 가든파티, 칵테일파티, 음식준비파티, 총각파티 중 어떤 종류이니?)

Mark: We thought a simple barbeque party since the weather is getting nice. We’d love to do some grilling and throw back a few beers!(날씨가 좋으니 간단한 바비큐파티 정도로 생각해. 고기 굽고 몇 잔의 맥주를 나누는 것이 좋아.)

John: Perfect! What can we do to help? We could organize some party favors and keep track of who R.S.V.P.s.(훌륭해! 무엇을 도울까? 파티선물 준비와 참석자 파악은 우리가 할 수 있어.)

Mark: That would be great! The invitations went out yesterday, so we should be hearing back from people in the next couple days. We’re taking care of the food and booze but I know some people have volunteered to bring potluck style dishes as well. Maybe you could keep track of who is bringing what for food.(그게 좋겠다! 어제 초대장이 나갔으니 며칠 안에 참석자들 파악할 수 있어. 몇몇 참석자들은 자발적으로 음식준비를 해오겠지만 우리는 식사랑 주류들을 준비할게. 너는 누가 음식을 준비해오는지 파악해줘.) <끝>
