Interview Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of North Gyeongsang Province

Governor Lee Cheol-woo of North Gyeongsang Province shared his thoughts on the significance of hosting the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, stating, "I believe this is not merely an international event, but an opportunity for North Gyeongsang and Gumi to emerge as global sports cities. Furthermore, it is a chance to elevate the regional economy and enhance the value of our city brand".

Q. What were some of the challenges in preparing for the event?

"After a fierce competition with Xiamen, China, we successfully won the bid to host the event, but securing national funding was not easy. For large-scale international events requiring more than 2 billion KRW in national support, it is generally necessary to obtain international event approval through a metropolitan-level local government.

However, as Gumi is a basic-level local government, it did not meet this requirement and thus faced institutional limitations. Through repeated visits to central government ministries, we tirelessly explained and demonstrated the necessity and feasibility of the event. As a result, we were selected in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's public contest for "Support Projects for International Sports Events Hosted by Local Governments," securing 500 million KRW in national funding."

Q. What impact will this have on the APEC 2025 KOREA to be held in Gyeongju this fall?

"It will serve as a major foundation for the success of the APEC 2025 KOREA, scheduled for October November in Gyeongju. We expect strong synergy in terms of our ability to manage international events and improve our global image.

North Gyeongsang will showcase its capacity to host large-scale international events to the global community. This will not only enhance the region's brand value and international recognition but also increase global trust in the APEC 2025 KOREA.

During the championships, we plan to operate promotional booths to publicize the APEC 2025 KOREA to athletes, officials, and spectators. This will help build momentum for a successful APEC 2025 KOREA and encourage return visits to Korea and North Gyeongsang Province."

Q. Would you recommend any distinctive cultural traditions or regional cuisines from North Gyeongsang Province or Gumi?

"We take pride in North Gyeongsang as the region that best represents Korean culture. It boasts a thousand-year history of Silla, as well as the cultural legacies of Gaya and Confucianism. It is also the origin of Korea's cultural identity, the "Five Hans" Hangeul (Korean alphabet), Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing), Hanok (Korean traditional houses), Hanji (Korean traditional paper), and Hansik (Korean food). The region is also blessed with beautiful natural landscapes such as the Baekdudaegan and Nakdong mountain ranges.

North Gyeongsang offers a wide variety of culinary delights that appeal to global tastes traditional foods like Andong Soju, Andong Jjimdak, and Galbi, along with local specialties like Cheongsong apples, Seongju melons, and Cheongdo persimmons. These will leave a lasting impression on foreign visitors, making the region known as a "land of delicious flavors."

Gumi is a region that has driven Korea's economic history. It is the birthplace of President Park Chung Hee, who led Korea's modernization through export-driven policies and the Saemaul Movement. Today, Gumi is renowned as a high-tech industrial city focused on future industries such as semiconductors and defense. It also boasts stunning natural scenery, with Mount Geumo surrounding the city like a folding screen and the Nakdong River running through the urban area. Gumi is further establishing itself as a cultural city, known for local foods like Seonsan Gopchang (beef intestines) and events like the "Gumi Ramyeon Festival."

Q. What are North Gyeongsang Province's mid- to long-term plans for becoming a global sports hub?

"Above all, we aim to solidify North Gyeongsang's image as an international sports city through the successful hosting of global events. Starting with the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, we plan to successively attract events such as the 2026 Cheongsong Ice Climbing World Cup and the 2027 Mungyeong World Soft Tennis Championships, thereby raising our international status.

We are also strengthening the infrastructure for both recreational and professional sports. To make sports more accessible to residents, we are promoting the construction of National Sports Centers at the city and county levels. Additionally, we are developing professional training facilities, such as the Yecheon Athletics Federation Training Center and the Gumi Athletics Training Ground, to foster elite athletes and enhance performance.

Furthermore, we are expanding our sports marketing efforts. We're actively attracting off-season training camps, which stimulate local consumption and temporarily increase the population. To support long-term stays, we are expanding specialized training facilities and linking them to sports tourism initiatives. This past winter alone, 396 teams across 16 sports more than 10,000 people visited North Gyeongsang for off-season training. In particular, areas like Yecheon, which offer excellent facilities and top-tier athletes, are actively attracting overseas training groups.

We will continue to do our utmost to promote balanced regional development and improve residents' quality of life through sports, ultimately advancing North Gyeongsang as a global sports hub."

Q. Do you have any final remarks for the athletes, international guests, and residents of Gumi?

"To all the athletes, officials, and international visitors attending the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. I hope this will be a stage where we challenge each other with our skills and unite as one Asia. Please enjoy your time and create cherished memories here in North Gyeongsang and Gumi. 이철우 경북도지사는 2025 구미 아시아 육상경기 선수권대회 개최가 가진 의미에 대해 "단순한 국제대회가 아닌 경북과 구미가 글로벌 스포츠 도시로 도약하고 나아가 지역 경제와 도시 브랜드 가치를 한 단계 더 높이는 기회라고 생각한다"고 밝혔다.

Q. 대회 준비과정에서 어려웠던 점이 있었다면?

"중국 샤먼시와 치열한 경쟁을 벌인 끝에 대회를 유치한 후 국비 확보 과정이 쉽지 않았다. 통상적으로 20억 원 이상의 국비가 필요한 대규모 국제대회의 경우, 광역자치단체를 통해 국제대회 승인을 받아야 국비 지원이 가능하다.

구미시는 기초지방자치단체로서 이 조건에 해당하지 않아 제도적 한계에 직면했다. 여러 차례 중앙부처를 방문해 대회의 필요성과 타당성을 설명하고 설득하는 등 끊임없는 노력을 펼친 결과 문화체육관광부 주관 '지자체 개최 국제경기대회 지원사업' 공모에 선정돼 5억 원의 국비를 확보했다."

Q. 올해 가을 경주에서 열리는 APEC 정상회의에 미치는 영향은?

"올해 10~11월 경주에서 열리는 '2025 APEC 정상회의' 성공의 큰 밑바탕이 될 것이다. 국제 행사 대응 역량과 글로벌 이미지 측면에서 긍정적 시너지 효과를 낼 것으로 기대한다.

경상북도는 대규모 국제 행사의 성공적 운영 역량을 국제사회에 보여줄 것이다. 지역의 브랜드 가치는 물론 국제적 인지도도 한층 높아질 것이고, 이러한 긍정적 이미지는 APEC 정상회의에 대한 국제적 신뢰도 제고로 이어질 것이다.

대회 기간 선수단, 임원, 관람객을 대상으로 APEC 정상회의 홍보 부스 등을 운영해 2025 APEC 정상회의를 널리 알릴 계획이다. APEC 성공 분위기 조성뿐 아니라 대한민국과 경상북도에 대한 재방문을 유도해 나갈 것이다."

Q. 경북과 구미를 알리고 싶은 특별한 문화나 전통, 음식은?

"경상북도는 대한민국 문화를 대표하는 지역이라 자부한다. 신라 천년의 역사와 가야·유교 문화, 민족 정체성의 근간인 5韓(한글, 한복, 한옥, 한지, 한식) 그리고 백두대간과 낙동정맥 등 자연환경도 빼어나다.

세계인의 입맛을 사로잡을 먹거리도 풍부하다. 안동소주, 안동찜닭, 갈비와 같은 전통음식, 청송 사과, 성주 참외, 청도 반시 등 다양한 지역 특산물 등은 외국인들에게도 매력적인 '맛의 고장'으로 기억될 것이다.

구미는 대한민국의 경제사를 이끈 고장이다. 근대화 시기 과감한 수출정책과 새마을운동을 주도한 박정희 대통령이 태어난 곳으로, 국가 경제발전의 중추적 역할을 했다. 이제는 반도체, 방위 등 미래 첨단산업 도시로 명성이 자자하다.

또, 금오산이 병풍처럼 둘러싸고 낙동강이 도심을 가로지르는 천혜의 경관으로 유명하다. '선산곱창', '구미 라면축제' 등 지역 특화 먹거리, 즐길 거리가 가득한 문화의 도시로 자리매김하고 있다."

Q. 경북이 글로벌 스포츠 도시로 도약하기 위한 중장기 계획은?

"무엇보다도 국제대회의 성공적인 개최를 통해 국제 스포츠 도시 경북의 이미지를 확고히 해나갈 것이다. 2025년 구미 아시아 육상경기 선수권대회를 시작으로 2026년 청송 아이스 클라이밍 월드컵, 2027년 문경 세계 소프트테니스 선수권대회 등 다양한 국제대회를 순차적으로 유치하며 글로벌 위상을 높여갈 것이다.

생활체육과 전문 체육의 기반 확충에 적극적으로 나선다. 도민들이 쉽게 스포츠를 접할 수 있도록 시·군 단위 국민체육센터 건립을 추진하고, 우수 선수 육성과 경기력 향상을 위해 예천 육상연맹 교육훈련센터, 구미 육상 전지 훈련장 등 전문 훈련시설도 조성 중이다.

여기에 더해 스포츠 마케팅도 활발하게 전개한다. 지역 소비를 진작시키고 생활 인구를 늘리는 데 효과적인 전지훈련 유치 확대에 힘쓰고 있다. 전지훈련을 위해 특화된 시설 확충과 스포츠 관광 연계사업으로 장기 체류도 유도한다.

이미 지난 시즌 동안 16개 종목, 396개 팀, 1만여 명이 경북을 찾아 전지훈련을 했다. 특히, 예천군처럼 우수한 훈련시설과 실업팀 소속 정상급 선수를 보유한 지역에서는 해외 전지훈련단 유치도 활발히 이뤄지고 있다.

앞으로도 스포츠를 통한 지역 균형 발전과 도민 삶의 질 향상을 실현하고, 나아가 세계적인 스포츠 중심지 경상북도로 도약할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다."

Q. 선수들과 해외 방문객, 도민, 국민에게 하시고 싶은 말씀은?

"2025 구미 아시아 육상경기 선수권대회를 찾아주신 국내외 선수단과 임원 여러분, 그리고 해외 방문객 여러분께 진심으로 감사하다는 말씀을 드린다. 서로의 실력을 겨루며, 아시아인이 하나 되는 무대가 되길 바란다. 또 마음껏 즐기며 경상북도와 구미에서 소중한 추억도 함께 간직하시길 기대한다. 여러분의 방문은 경상북도의 큰 자랑이며, 올가을 경주에서 열리는 2025년 APEC 정상회의에서도 다시 만나기를 소망한다."
