Falling in Love with Gumi,s Charm

Geumridan-gil (Wonpyeong-dong) a beloved street full of youth and passion.

Foreign athletes and tourists who visited Gumi for the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships fully enjoyed the city's atmosphere. From traditional markets to trendy alleyways, riverside promenades, and night market, Gumi's various attractions drew the attention of foreign tourists and visitors from other cities, injecting vitality into the local economy.

Visitors from Daegu, Gyeongsan, and Chilgok who traveled on the Daegyeong Line railway, which connects Gyeongsan·Daegu·Gumi, and arrived at Gumi Station first headed to the Saemaeul Central Market, just a five-minute walk away. With its clean environment, diverse food options, and friendly atmosphere, the market became a popular destination for both domestic visitors and athletes, officials, and spectators. Market alleys filled with gukbap(rice soup), tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), guksu(noodles), and side dish stores offered a vivid experience of Korean life and culture.

Behind Gumi Station, Geumridan-gil is a vibrant area brimming with youthful energy, filled with popular restaurants, cafes, craft workshops, and accessory shops. Walking through its charming alleys allowed visitors to naturally experience Gumi's unique ambiance. The wide variety of cafes and shops also gained attention as popular photo spots on social media.

Just a 10-minute walk from Geumridan-gil, the 2.4km Geumocheon Riverside Walkway offered stunning scenery both day and night. With night lighting and riverside benches, it was beloved by couples and family tourists alike. Surrounding the walkway were various local eateries, including restaurants specializing in richly seasoned fugu, traditional Korean dish sundubu(soft tofu), sujebi(noodle soup), pajeon (green onion pancake), and premium traditional Korean full-course meals, all of which captivated visitors' taste buds.

The Indong area, where the athletes' village accommodations were concentrated, was also well-loved. The Romantic Night Market near Indong Market overflowed with various foods and entertainment, becoming a favorite among foreign athletes and tourists. Indong Rodeo Street, packed with diverse restaurants and cafes, continuously attracted young visitors, while Jinpyeong-dong's Food Specialty Street offered a charming 24-hour culinary scene. Gupyeong-dong's Food Alley, with its relaxed atmosphere, allowed visitors to enjoy leisurely strolls and dining, making it especially popular among families. With a beautiful night view, traditional foods, and modern eateries all blended together, visitors experienced the special culture of Gumi.

The area around Sagok Station, where the Daegyeong Line also stops, became a special space for exploring Gumi's industrial history and modern heritage. At the Birthplace and Historical Archive of President Park Chung Hee, visitors learned about his early years and the creation of the Gumi National Industrial Complex.

The nearby Saemaul Undong Theme Park, a complex cultural space commemorating the modernization of rural areas and the Saemaul Movement, vividly conveyed the lifestyle and community culture of rural Korea at the time.

The Global Cooperation Meeting for Foreign Diplomats in Korea and the accompanying city tour, which invited high-level diplomats from over 20 countries (out of the 45 member countries of the Asian Athletics Association) that have diplomatic missions in Korea, effectively showcased Gumi's cultural, industrial, and tourism infrastructure.

Additionally, an event inviting delegations from Gumi's international sister cities such as Otsu in Japan, and Changsha, Shenyang, and Guang an in China as well as key figures from Asian national athletics associations, became an opportunity to promote Gumi to the world, extending beyond the realm of sports.

구미의 매력에 흠뻑 빠지다

2025아시아육상경기대회 참가를 위해 구미를 찾은 외국 선수와 관광객들은 구미시 곳곳의 정취를 만끽했다. 전통시장부터 젊은 감각의 골목길, 수변 산책로, 야시장에 이르기까지 다양한 명소에는 국내외 관광객이 몰려들어 지역경제에도 활력을 불어넣었다.

경산~대구~구미를 연결하는 대경선을 타고 구미역에 도착한 대구, 경산, 칠곡 관람객들은 걸어서 5분 거리의 '새마을 중앙시장'을 가장 먼저 찾았다. 이곳은 깔끔한 환경과 다양한 먹거리, 정겨운 분위기로 국내와 선수와 임원, 관람객들의 인기몰이를 했다. 국밥, 떡볶이, 국수, 반찬가게가 즐비한 시장골목에서는 한국인의 삶과 문화를 오감으로 만족시켰다.

구미의 젊은 에너지가 결집된 구미역 뒤편의 아기자기한 골목 '금리단길'의 맛집, 카페, 공방, 소품샵은 구미만의 독특한 청춘 문화를 체험하기에 충분했다. 다양한 형태의 카페, 소품샵은 SNS 촬영 명소로 주목 받았다.

금리단길에서 도보 10분 거리인 '2.4km 금오천 산책로 수변길'은 낮과 밤 모두 아름다운 화려한 경관을 자랑했다. 야간조명과 수변 벤치는 연인과 가족 관광객들에게도 사랑을 받았다. 이곳 주변의 구미를 대표하는 다양한 로컬 맛집인 진한 양념 북어집, 한국 전통의 음식 순두부집, 전통 양식의 고급 한정식집, 수제비와 파전집은 방문객의 입맛을 사로잡았다.

선수촌 숙소가 밀집된 인동동 일대도 사랑 받았다. 인동시장 인근 '낭만야시장'은 다양한 먹거리와 즐길거리가 넘쳐 외국 선수와 관광객들의 큰 사랑을 받았다. 인동로데오거리에는 다양한 맛집과 카페가 밀집해 젊은 층의 발길이 이어졌고, 진평동 음식특화거리는 24시간 매력적인 풍경을 선물했다. 구평동 먹자거리는 여유로운 분위기로 산책과 외식을 즐겨 가족 단위 관광객에게 인기몰이했다. 한층 돋보인 야경, 전통 음식, 현대적 맛집이 어우러져 구미의 특별한 문화를 경험했다.

대경선이 정차하는 사곡역 일대는 구미의 산업 역사와 근현대사를 만날 수 있는 특별한 공간이 됐다. 박정희 대통령 생가와 역사자료관은 박 대통령의 유년시절, 구미국가산업단지 조성 과정을 전시장에서 살펴봤다. 농촌 근대화와 새마을운동을 기념하는 복합문화공간인 인근 새마을운동테마공원은 당시 농촌 생활과 공동체 문화를 생생히 전달했다.

아시아육상연맹 회원국 45개국 중 주한외교공관을 차린 20여개국의 고위 외교관을 초청한 주한외교관 글로벌협력회의와 시티투어는 구미의 문화·산업·관광 인프라 자랑에 충분했다.

국제자매우호도시인 일본 오츠시, 중국 창사·선양시·광안시 관계자, 아시아국가육상협회 주요 인사로 구성된 대표단 초청행사는 스포츠를 넘어 구미를 세계에 알리는 기회가 된 것이다.
